Marcela goes to Tokyo

Close up of glass facade in Tokyo

From one archipelago to another—it took me 2 days to get there from Orcas, but it was totally worth it. My sister Maria and I go on a trip every year. Last year we weren’t able to go since I was busy moving to an island (still pinching myself). But, we really made up for it with this trip. Tokyo is orderly chaos. With quiet pockets in between. Oh, and the food. And so many beautiful sights. And cute stickers to buy.

Owuor Arunga: The Pied Piper of Macklemore

Owuor Arunga playing the trumpet with Omojafest logo

A couple of years ago we did some work for UmojaFest Peace Center. The purpose of the festival is to highlight the history and countless contributions of African-Americans.

The man on the banner for their main stage is none other than Owuor Arunga: The Pied Piper of Macklemore (and Ryan Lewis).

He’s a real inspiration.

“For me music is about unity, healing, love, joy, all the beautiful faculties of the mind even sometimes anger, or haughty behavior, drama, fun and adventure.”

—Owuor Arunga

Sonic Bloom

Flower sculpture below Space Needle

Sonic Bloom is a playful interactive art installation at the foot of Seattle’s Space Needle and a defining entry sculpture to the Pacific Science Center. 5 giant solar flowers absorb the sun’s energy and express it at night with patterned LED lighting and in the daytime with a chorus of interactive harmonic tones triggered by people’s movement around each flower.

Created by local artist Dan Corson and commissioned by the Pacific Science Center and our friends in the Conservation Resources division at Seattle City Light.

It’s free to the public, so swing on by and enjoy the flowers.

WE MOVED. THEN WE WERE MOVED.

West Sound Pier on Orcas Island

Somelab now calls Orcas Island home!

Shortly after arriving on the island (not for a vacation this time!), we read about the Orcas Island Farm to Cafeteria Program. They were trying to raise $11,000 to fund next year’s efforts. If they made their goal, the funds would be matched by 11 generous islanders. But the clock was ticking. They needed to meet the goal by the end of November. We were so inspired by them and what they are doing for our new community—we were happy to put them over the top.

While we frequently head back to Seattle to see clients and friends, we love having visitors. So come check out our new studio and see what a change of scenery can do for inspiration.

All the best to you and yours in 2014.

The abundance of slowness

Illustration of bearded man with leaves in his beard

“Workaholics aren’t heroes. They don’t save the day, they just use it up. The real hero is already home because she figured out a faster way to get things done.”

— Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hansson, Rework

A must read on the importance of slowness and being creative. READ ON
